The Caribbean is home to 13 sovereign countries, so it’s no surprise that there are many ways to celebrate independence in the region.
February is an important month in several Caribbean destinations; the Dominican Republic, Grenada and Saint Lucia all commemorate their independence this month. But there are also Caribbean independence days in the summer and fall, so regardless of the season, travelers may find a way to plan a vacation around the festivities.
In addition, travel companies such as NCG Experience can help arrange customized itineraries centered around independence day celebrations. Some hoteliers stage on-site events and can help guests attend larger gatherings, too.
Here are some of the largest independence day celebrations around the Caribbean.
Bahamas, July 10
The Bahamas is celebrating 51 years of independence this year, and the merriment will extend throughout the entire summer, with live music and entertainment, games and culinary experiences. It’s a perfect complement to the Junkanoo Summer Festival, which features a massive parade with music, dance and colorful costumes; the largest version of the festival takes place in downtown Nassau.
Barbados, Nov. 30
Barbados celebrates its independence in style. Expect lots of live music and dance, as well as military processions, sporting events, fairs and a photo-worthy lighting of the monument at Independence Square in the capital city of Bridgetown. In addition, the Annual National Independence Festival of Creative Arts — a performing arts competition — will bring some of the nation’s greatest talent to the stage.
Dominican Republic, Feb. 27
Independence celebrations in the Dominican Republic include a festival, a flag-raising ceremony, a parade, live musical performances, an artisan fair and the appearance of diablo cojuelo, a character who represents the spirit of the nation’s Carnival festivities. Companies such as Punta Cana Adventures work with travel advisors to create itineraries with independence day activities.
Grenada, Feb. 7
In 2024, Grenada is celebrating its 50th year of independence, and the festivities will extend throughout much of the year. (It’s not too early to start planning a trip for next year’s celebration, either.) To commemorate, the capital city of St. George’s hosts an impressive military parade, accompanied by a variety of ceremonies, cultural exhibits and street parties.
Sandals Grenada is offering a “celebration of Grenadian culture” in the days leading up to the island's independence day, and Calabash Grenada, a Relais & Chateaux property, also provides information for guests looking to attend the public events.
Jamaica, Aug. 6
Jamaica gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962, and the nation celebrates with parades, fireworks, vibrant costumes, music and dance, as well as cultural events and lots of delicious Jamaican cuisine. The capital city of Kingston is the best place to celebrate, but several hotels elsewhere on the island will also connect guests with independence-themed activities — including Half Moon, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, and The Tryall Club. The latter can arrange for special decorations, live reggae music and the option to have a private chef prepare personalized menus with traditional Jamaican cuisine. The property can also arrange transportation to and from the official independence day festival in Kingston.
Saint Lucia, Feb. 22
It’s been 45 years since St. Lucia gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1979, and this year’s celebrations will include the usual festivities: a military parade, street festivals, cultural exhibitions, live music and lots of foodie experiences. Zoetry Marigot Bay St. Lucia, part of World of Hyatt, is commemorating independence with a weekend full of activities.
Trinidad and Tobago, Aug. 31
Military parades, ceremonies and live musical performances — focused heavily on calypso and soca, musical styles that were born here — mark the independence-themed events in Trinidad and Tobago. Among the best places to tap into the excitement is the capital city of Port of Spain, where the parade is especially grand and street parties are lively.
Other Patriotic Celebrations in the Caribbean
Several Caribbean destinations that aren’t fully independent still host interesting annual celebrations. The Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire, for example, celebrates Flag Day on Sept. 6. The U.S. Virgin Islands, meanwhile, hosts Freedom Week, which commemorates the emancipation of slaves on Emancipation Day on July 3, 1848. And in St. Eustatius, Statia Day is a holiday that honors the island’s historic connection with the U.S. (St. Eustatius was the first foreign entity to officially recognize the U.S. by saluting its flag back in 1776.) Staff at Golden Rock Dive and Nature Resort dress in historic costumes to celebrate.
