Mediterranean Shipping Cruises forms part of a huge Swiss-owned container company, Mediterranean Shipping Co. It entered the cruise business in the late 1980s by purchasing Lauro Line, renamed Star Lauro. The name changed after the loss of the Achille Lauro to fire and sinking. This fast-growing company has a current fleet of 12 ships with two additional ships expected in 2017 and 2019 .
