The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) will launch its Tomorrow’s Air program, a 2020 climate change initiative that allows travelers and businesses to reduce carbon emissions through a direct air capture technology developed by Climeworks (a Switzerland-based environmental technology company).
Climeworks’ groundbreaking technology removes carbon dioxide from the air, turns it to stone and stores it permanently underground. Since tourism is responsible for 8% of the Earth’s global emissions — and the natural environment is at the core of our industry’s business — it has become imperative that travel companies take a collective approach in reducing their environmental impact. Now, the travel community can support Climeworks by purchasing their own carbon removal.
“We know that the use of purpose-built machines for removing carbon alongside nature-based methods will be needed to reach our goals in the short time we have,” said Christina Beckmann, senior director for strategy and impact for the ATTA. “Climeworks’ method is live and operational today, and it’s simple and accessible for travelers who want to act on climate change.”
