With social distancing becoming the norm around the world, the concept of vacationing outdoors makes more sense than ever. And travelers don’t need to give up creature comforts when they opt for a glamping trip in Mexico.
A decidedly 21st-century term, “glamping” puts a glamorous spin on the camping experience, with extra amenities and services to assure that travelers are always well cared for. Several destinations around Mexico offer interesting options.
The Mexican state of Baja California Sur, for example, is an especially rewarding place for glamping fans. In Los Cabos, Montage Los Cabos recently launched Montage Expeditions, which arranges luxurious camping experiences at the Dos Arroyos campsite, not far from the hotel. There, guests can choose from several outdoorsy activities, including paintball, archery and ax throwing.
Near the city of La Paz, travelers will find multiple options at Rancho Cacachilas, a nearly 35,000-acre complex that includes private working ranches, an adventure resort and a wilderness camp. Guests can choose from multiple glamping sites and enjoy activities including mountain biking, hiking and running. Among the accommodation options is Rancho Chivato, where amenities include a community room with Wi-Fi access, a fireplace, a small library, an indoor and outdoor kitchen and a small swimming pool with views of the Sea of Cortez. Chivato’s safari tents have either a single or queen-size bed as well as indoor and outdoor seating and battery-operated lighting.
Travelers looking to include glamping as part of a larger tour program might want to consider booking with Boundless Journeys, a tour company that’s offering a 2021 trip called Baja Sierras & Sea of Cortez Safari, which includes visits to multiple biodiverse areas in Baja California Sur. Accommodations include a stay at Camp Cecil de la Sierra, a luxury tented camp with just four tents in the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve. The camp has an on-site library, reading area and yoga space, and guests can savor meals cooked on a wood-fired stove. The itinerary also includes a visit to Espirito Santo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where guests check into Camp Cecil de la Isla, a beach camp that features a daily happy hour.
