With its futuristic skyscrapers, glittering shopping malls and chaotic street hawkers, Singapore is a hot spot for city slickers. The small island country nestled between Malaysia and Indonesia combines modernity and tradition with ease. Ferries, buses and cable cars connect Singapore’s various islands, so getting around is hassle-free, and exclusive hotels, such as the famous Marina Bay Sands, compete with the largest metropolises.
The city-state — also known as the Lion City — is a melting pot of cultures; it’s home to a mix of Chinese people, Malaysians, Indians and immigrants from all over the world. And with a population of around 5 million in a very small space, areas of interest such as Chinatown, Little India or Marina Bay are easily explored on foot. Singapore is also a popular starting point for trips to Malaysia or Indonesia’s Bintan Island, as well as to the islands of Southeast Asia.
But the destination is more than just a stopover, especially with its ever-new influx of hotels, restaurants, bars and attractions. Here’s the latest on what’s new in Singapore as you plan clients’ exciting Southeast Asia getaways.
New Properties
Singapore saw many new openings over the past year, with several brands establishing their first properties in Southeast Asia in the country — and there’s plenty more to come.
Pullman Singapore Orchard, for one, marked Pullman Hotels and Resorts’ debut in the Lion City. Surrounded by major retail malls, leading fashion labels and global brands, the 326-room property is heaven for technology lovers, as it offers a high level of automation. Guests can enjoy a fully contactless check-in, access the hotel’s services via an app and customize every part of their ambience — from temperature and lighting to air-conditioning. The on-site Eden Restaurant, situated in a stunning greenhouse-style setting with captivating views, celebrates the diverse flavors of Asia.
Another recently opened Accor brand is Mondrian Singapore Duxton, located among the traditional shophouses of Chinatown. Composed of 302 guestrooms and suites, it combines historic architecture such as a terracotta roof and colonial-style window shutters with modern, contemporary influences. Minibars, Lavazza coffee machines and bath amenities by Malin+Goetz ensure every in-room comfort is considered.
The highly anticipated 347-room Pan Pacific Orchard, meanwhile, opened in June. The 23-story skyscraper boasts four seamlessly connected, terraced environments: Forest, Beach, Garden and Cloud. The hotel is the first in the city center to offer lofts that allow guests to wade directly into the pool from their room, and the property maintains a big focus on sustainability, using processes such as rainwater collection and recyclable water systems.
Edition is set to open a 204-room property in Singapore by the fall — its first hotel in Southeast Asia. Located in the heart of the downtown Orchard district, The Singapore Edition will feature five restaurant and bar venues, a rooftop pool, a spa, a fitness center and nearly 6,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space for meetings and events.
Opening by October, Artyzen Singapore will be home to 142 luxury lifestyle accommodations. All suites will feature large landscaped green terraces and special art pieces that nod to the heritage of the Straits Chinese people (also known as Peranakans) who immigrated to Singapore in the 15th century. On the top floor, The Roof Garden will offer snacks and drinks, as well as a cantilevered infinity pool for a cooling dip.
New Bars and Dining Venues
A thriving blend of Southeast Asian cultures and cuisines drives Singapore’s exciting restaurant scene, and one newcomer to the scene is Province, an intimate eight-seat eatery offering contemporary cuisine via a seven-course prix-fixe tasting menu. With chef Law Jia-Jun — a young local talent — at the helm, Province limits each dish to only five components so the essence of the ingredients can shine with their natural flavors and textures.
Opened in March, Hanazen at Chijmes is headed by chef Yusuke Takada, who is the founder of the two-Michelin-star La Cime in Osaka, Japan. In Singapore, he's cooking up charcoal-grilled meat skewers and seafood using the best of French and Japanese techniques. Hanazen serves only a 16-course omakase dinner and a recently launched eight-course experimental menu.
As for new bars, The Hidden Story is a speakeasy along East Coast Road that pays homage to both the illicit bars during America’s Prohibition era and the neighborhood’s rich Peranakan heritage.
New Tours and Attractions
Among Singapore’s new tours and attractions is a free Changi Precinct Tour from Changi Airport. The 2.5-hour tour allows transfer and transit passengers to visit a uniquely designed residential town nearby the airport. Participants must have a layover period of at least 5.5 hours to 24 hours and a valid entry visa for Singapore.
Since May 2023, the 42-acre Mandai Bird Paradise wildlife park at Mandai Wildlife Reserve has allowed animal-loving visitors the chance to view some 3,500 birds from more than 400 avian species in eight large walk-in aviaries.
Foodies, meanwhile, can explore the city with Kindred Journeys, a collection of food and beverage-related experiences that tells the story of Singapore's culinary culture and heritage. Guests can learn secret recipes, roll sushi with a Michelin-star chef or take a moment to practice mindfulness through “silent dining.”
